"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." -Margaret Hungerford

Fashion (noun): A prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc.

How Fashion Is Gendered

Many girls look to runway fashion for advice as to what to wear and how they should look. Whatever they see on the runway, they attempt to replicate in their own style. Since girls face more pressure when it comes to weight and their fashion, it is more common for them to look to sources like this for what is viewed as attractive.

Self- Objectification is when an individual begins to view themselves as an object and not a person. They see themselves purely for how they look. When girls turn to sources of fashion that parade around unrealistically skinny women, they will go to extreme measures to meet that standard. This can also lead to eating disorders and low self-esteem.

"We know seeing super thin models can play a role in causing anorexia," says Nada Stotland, professor of psychiatry at Rushmore Medical College in Chicago, and vice president of American Psychiatric Association. Because many models and actresses are so thin, it makes anorexics think their emaciated bodies are normal, she says. "But these people look scary. They don't look normal."
